Winchester holds some of the more interesting glass in the valley. The Paradise Palms neighborhood off Eastern and Desert Inn was among the first modern subdivisions built here, and those houses were designed around their windows: clerestory bands tucked under the roofline, floor to ceiling panels facing the yard, very little wall left in between, which makes them a pleasure to work on and a slow job to do properly. Owners who have restored them do not want anything abrasive near that original glass.
The commercial side of the township is just as old. Maryland Parkway, the Commercial Center District and the blocks around the Boulevard Mall carry storefronts dating back decades, with deep entry recesses and transom glass above the doors that gets forgotten between cleanings. Residential routes run the streets off Sahara and Flamingo, where lots are compact and block walls decide the approach, so most of this township gets worked from ground level with poles rather than from a ladder set in a side yard.

Clerestory windows are the local problem. Set high under a flat roof, they catch everything the wind carries and almost never get rinsed by rain, so a fine dust layer builds up there year after year while the glass at eye level still looks presentable.
Lower down it is the usual valley mix, hard water off irrigation and fine street grit, with an extra helping of road film along Maryland Parkway and Sahara. Flat roofs add one more thing. What rain does run off carries roof dirt straight down the tall panels beneath, and that leaves vertical streaking which has to be washed off rather than wiped away with a cloth.
From the ground with water fed poles in most cases, since those bands sit high under a flat roof and there is rarely a safe ladder angle beneath them. Because rain almost never reaches that height, the dust up there is thick and dry rather than washed thin, so it needs a proper soak before anything touches the surface. We do the clerestory band first and let it drain, then work down to the lower panels.
Yes, and it is worth asking for, because transoms are the panes most often skipped. Older buildings along Maryland Parkway and around the Commercial Center District have deep entry recesses with glass above the doors that no one has reached in years. That area collects dust and cobwebs without ever seeing rain. We clean the transom, the recess frames and the door glass as one unit so the entry actually reads as clean.
It is, provided nobody takes shortcuts with it. Original panes in these houses are thinner than modern glass and often sit in slim aluminum or steel frames with aging seals, so we skip blades and abrasives entirely and work with solution, a soft scrubber and a hand finish. Any coating on a restored window gets tested in a corner first. If a pane already has scratches or delamination, we point it out before starting.
