Glass is a big part of how Sarasota was built. The midcentury houses that came out of the Sarasota School of Architecture used walls of single pane glass and long clerestory bands where other places used brick, and plenty of that stock is still lived in around Lido Shores and along the bayfront. Our crews slow down for it. Old glazing putty and thin float glass do not forgive pressure, so those homes get hand work instead of a pole and a fast pass.
The rest of the city is a mix. Laurel Park and Burns Court are tight bungalow blocks with wood sash and narrow side yards. Downtown along Main Street and Palm Avenue is storefront glass with second floor offices above it. Out on the keys the houses are newer, taller and mostly impact rated. We route the keys on their own day because the bridges decide how long a morning takes.
Amazing job. Very professional and our windows are perfectly clean. Thanks Squeegeezy!

Like peas in a pod...

The Sarasota problem is airborne and it is abrasive. The quartz sand on the keys is fine and light, and an onshore breeze carries it inland where it settles on glass and then gets ground into the surface the moment someone wipes a dry pane. Add the salt riding along with it and you have a film that cannot be buffed off without scratching.
So we flood first. Sand and salt lift away in water with a soft mop before any blade or cloth touches the surface, which is the difference between a clean pane and a hazed one. Bayfront and key properties finish with a deionized rinse. Further inland the bigger nuisance is rain spotting after summer storms and the sap and pollen that drop from live oaks in spring.
Yes, and we handle it differently from modern glass. Older single pane units with soft putty glazing do not tolerate pressure or aggressive scraping, so those panes are washed by hand with a soft mop and a light touch, and we keep a blade off them entirely. If a glazing bead is failing we point it out rather than working over it, because a wet clean can turn a tired putty line into a leak.
Near the keys it is usually salt and very fine sand rather than dirt. An onshore breeze carries both inland and they settle back on glass quickly. The part that matters is never wiping a dry pane, because that sand behaves like grit against the surface. We flood the glass first so everything lifts away in the water, and bayfront properties finish on a deionized rinse that leaves nothing for salt to bond to.
We do. Main Street, Palm Avenue and the blocks around them are mostly storefront glass with second floor office windows above, and both are on our regular commercial route. Shops there generally book weekly or every other week, and we start before opening so nobody is stepping around a bucket on the sidewalk. Restaurants with outdoor seating usually add the entry glass and door plates to the same visit.
