The San Francisco bay window is the city's signature and its signature challenge. Victorian and Edwardian facades stack three and four stories straight up from the sidewalk, with bay assemblies that project outward and put half the glass beyond the reach of a ladder set on level ground, assuming the ground is level, which it frequently is not. Access here gets planned building by building rather than assumed.
The Sunset and Richmond are rows of similar homes where a crew moves efficiently once they know the pattern. Noe Valley, Bernal Heights and Potrero add steep streets and rear decks that hang over a drop. Pacific Heights and the Marina bring larger buildings and more complicated glass. Downtown and the commercial corridors are storefront and office work, scheduled early, and parking dictates the day nearly as much as the buildings do.

Like peas in a pod...
The city has two climates and the glass shows it. In the fog belt west of the hills, panes stay damp for most of the day through much of the year, and that persistent moisture leaves a mineral haze while shaded frames grow a green edge along the bottom rail.
East of the hills there is more sun, less fog and a heavier load of urban film off the traffic. Salt reaches everything eventually, since the water is never far away in any direction. We use a solution that dissolves the mineral haze instead of smearing it, treat frame growth as its own step, and hand detail the small panes and decorative sash common on the older facades.
It depends entirely on the building, which is why we look before quoting. Some bays are reachable with water fed poles from the sidewalk, some need interior access floor by floor, and upper floors on a tall facade may require a rope or lift arrangement. Sloping streets change what a ladder can safely do. We tell you the method up front rather than turning up and improvising against a three story facade.
Persistent damp. On the fog side of the city a pane can stay wet most of the day for months at a time, and a shaded frame never dries out at all. That is where algae takes hold, usually along the bottom rail and in the channel. We clean it out as a separate step from the glass itself, though it will return unless the window gets more light and airflow than it currently has.
Constantly, given how much of the housing stock is exactly that. Old double hung sash carries generations of paint, aging putty and hardware that may not have moved in decades, so we clean what opens and leave what does not. Decorative and divided lite panels are hand detailed. If a sash is loose in the frame or the glazing is failing, you hear about it before we work near that window.
