Sacramento has one of the densest urban tree canopies in the country, and it shapes the work more than the architecture does. Midtown, East Sacramento and Land Park sit under mature elms, oaks and sycamores, above homes that run from Victorians and Craftsman bungalows to 1930s Tudor, nearly all with original wood sash, leaded panels and porches that limit where a ladder can be set.
The grid downtown keeps routing simple, and the older commercial blocks bring storefront and upper floor sash. North and south of the core, Natomas, the Pocket and the newer subdivisions are two story stucco with tall entry glass and far less shade overhead. The rivers cut through the middle of everything, so a job on the wrong side of a bridge at the wrong hour costs more time than the cleaning itself takes.

That canopy delivers three separate things a year. Heavy pollen in spring, a sticky sap and honeydew drip through summer, and a full load of leaf litter into every sill and track come autumn. Under a mature tree, glass simply does not stay clean as long as it does out in an open subdivision with nothing overhead.
Late summer adds smoke drift from foothill and Sierra fires, settling as fine ash, and local water is hard enough that sprinkler overspray spots quickly in the heat. We soften sap rather than scraping it, flood ash instead of wiping it, treat mineral deposits as their own step, and clear the tracks that fill with litter every fall.

Sap and the honeydew that drips from insects in the canopy are both sticky and both dry hard, so a solution needs time to break the bond before a plastic blade lifts anything. Then the full pane gets washed so no ring is left behind. Homes directly under a mature tree usually need one more visit a year than a house on an open lot nearby.

Original wood sash often has decades of paint and glazing putty that has gone brittle, so we clean without forcing anything and keep blades well clear of failing putty. Leaded and divided lite panels are detailed by hand. Deep porches decide ladder placement, so setup gets planned around the architecture instead of against it.
Wet, always. Ash drifting down from foothill and mountain fires is abrasive, so wiping a dry pane grinds it into the surface and leaves fine scratching that shows in low sun forever after. We flood the glass so the ash floats free, wash properly, then clear the sills and tracks where the heavier material settles. If smoke is still hanging around, waiting a few days usually saves paying for two visits.
