At roughly forty five hundred feet, Reno gets a real winter, and that sets our calendar more than anything else does. Water here comes off the Sierra by way of the Truckee River and it is softer than what southern Nevada gets, so spotting has less to do with minerals and more with what the air is carrying.
Spring puts juniper and sagebrush pollen on any pane still holding morning dew. Summer smoke drifting into the Truckee Meadows leaves a fine ash that goes gray and greasy once humidity touches it. Winter inversions then trap wood smoke over the valley for days, and it settles on north facing glass that never sees direct sun. Freeze and thaw finishes the work by loosening old glazing putty on historic sash, which is why we check bedding compound while the storms are down.
Late April through October is the main exterior window. Cleaning glass near freezing does not work, since water sheets and refreezes before a squeegee can clear it, so winter calls usually become interior only appointments. Most homeowners here book an exterior clean once pollen season winds down in late spring, then a second in October to clear summer smoke film and road dust before weather turns. Storefronts stay on a year round schedule regardless.
On most older southwest Reno and Midtown houses, yes. Aluminum storms hung over original wood sash come off in sequence, get cleaned on both faces, and return to the exact opening they came out of, since they are rarely interchangeable between windows. We note frame condition while they are down. If a panel is corroded into place or the fasteners are seized, we leave it alone rather than risk damaging the sash around it.
It does. Smoke drifting into the Truckee Meadows drops a fine ash that binds with dew and leaves a gray film, and it returns as long as the smoke does. We usually suggest waiting for the air to clear before booking an exterior clean, otherwise you pay for a result that lasts a week. That film also wants a detergent wash rather than plain water, because the ash carries oils that a simple rinse only smears around.
