Redwood City changes character every couple of miles, and the work changes with it. Out on the fill at Redwood Shores the townhomes and office buildings look straight at the lagoons and the bay, with a lot of fixed glass and second story panels that need pole work from a narrow walkway. Downtown around Broadway and Middlefield Road is denser and older, with restored storefronts, upper floor sash and the courthouse dome as the landmark everyone routes by.
West of El Camino Real the ground rises into Emerald Hills, Farm Hill and Mount Carmel. Mornings on the bay side put salt in the air. Marine humidity comes in off the sloughs, condenses on cold glass overnight and dries into a dull mineral haze rather than rinsing away. Waterfowl around the lagoons add their share on rails, sills and the lower corners of fixed panels.
Uphill the problem turns organic instead of mineral. Oaks and bay laurel drop pollen through the spring and a light sap film in the warm months, and both bind to glass that sits in shade most of the day. We match the method to the elevation: a surfactant wash and full squeegee pass on the bayside salt, and a longer dwell on the sap and pollen before any blade touches the pane.
Marine air off the sloughs carries dissolved salt and minerals. It condenses on cold glass overnight, then the water evaporates during the day and leaves the solids behind. Repeat that for a few weeks and you get the dull haze that plain water will not touch, because plain water is not what caused it. The fix is a surfactant wash that dissolves the deposit and a full squeegee pass so nothing dries back onto the pane.
Yes. The neighborhoods above El Camino Real sit on real grades, with steep driveways and rear elevations that drop away toward the canyon. Those rear windows are usually the biggest on the house and the hardest to reach, so crews bring levelers, stabilizers and enough pole length to work from stable ground instead of a compromised ladder position. We look at the back of the property first and quote based on what is actually there.
Often, since the older bungalows near downtown still carry double hung wood sash, sometimes painted shut and sometimes with soft glazing putty. We clean those without forcing a sash that does not want to move and without scraping putty that is already failing. Divided lite panes take longer because each small piece is detailed by hand. If a sash is in poor shape we say so, so a cleaning visit does not turn into a repair bill.
