Road salt is the defining problem in this township. From December into March the roads are treated constantly, and passing traffic throws a fine brine spray across everything within reach, drying to a white crust on ground floor glass, storm panels and sills.
Salt does more than look bad. It sits in storm window channels and against aluminum frames all winter and pits them, so the spring clean here is the one that really matters, and it takes a flood and rinse rather than a wipe. After that come tree pollen in May, summer humidity that grows mildew on north walls, and leaf tannin staining once the maples drop in fall.
Spring, once the roads stop being salted and the overnight temperatures stay above freezing, usually sometime in April. That visit clears a whole winter of brine crust off the lower glass and out of the storm window channels before it does any more damage. A second clean in October, after the leaves come down, keeps things clear through the holidays. April fills up fast here, so booking in late winter is worth doing.
Yes, and on these bungalows it is most of the job. Aluminum triple tracks have several panes plus a screen inside one frame, so cleaning only the outer face leaves four surfaces dirty. We take the inserts out, wash each one flat, clear the channels and the weep holes, then put everything back where it came from. If a clip is broken or a spring balance has failed we will tell you, though we do not repair them.
By dissolving it rather than rubbing at it. Brine dries into a crust that scratches if you drag a cloth over it dry, so the pane gets flooded first, washed with detergent, then rinsed clean. Sills, storm channels and the bottom rail get flushed too, because salt sitting in an aluminum channel keeps corroding the frame long after the glass looks fine. Houses on Telegraph or Grand River see the most of it.
