Murfreesboro grew outward across farmland fast enough that a street of new houses often backs straight onto a field or a cedar thicket, and that edge is where the interesting work happens. Subdivisions off Veterans Parkway and out toward Blackman carry conventional two story stock with tall entry glass, while the older streets near the courthouse square and along East Main hold brick houses with original sash, deep porches and far more shade over the glass.

Two things here come up from the ground rather than down from the sky. Rutherford County sits on shallow limestone with red clay above it, and clay dust off construction and field edges stains rather than simply dusting, so it has to be washed off instead of brushed away.
Cedar is the second. Eastern red cedar grows thick in the glades around town and releases pollen in the middle of winter, months ahead of anything else, which surprises people who assume spring owns the whole pollen season. On top of that sit the usual Middle Tennessee patterns: oak and maple in spring, humid summers that grow mildew in shaded frame corners, and road salt through winter.
Eastern red cedar is almost certainly the answer. It grows thick in the limestone glades around Rutherford County and releases pollen in the depths of winter, long before oaks and maples wake up. So a January film on the glass is not unusual here at all. It washes off like any pollen, though it needs a proper wash rather than a dry wipe, since moisture binds it to the surface quickly.
By flooding it first. Clay is not a loose dust, it stains, and dragging a cloth across a dry pane spreads a rust colored smear rather than lifting anything. We soak the glass, wash with detergent and rinse clean, then work the sills and tracks where clay collects and washes back down with the next rain. Houses backing an active build site usually need this more than twice a year.
Yes, and the square runs on its own schedule. Glass at sidewalk level picks up hand prints, door pushes and shoe scuff daily, so most businesses there book weekly, biweekly or monthly rather than seasonally. Visits are short and done before opening. Older buildings around the square also have transom glass above the entries that rarely gets touched, and we include that so the whole storefront reads clean rather than half of it.
