Medford lies at the bottom of the Rogue Valley with hills rising on both sides, and being in a bowl shapes everything about the work. The east side climbs onto those hills with newer homes and large windows angled to catch the valley view, while the west side and the older streets near downtown hold smaller midcentury houses on flat lots. Pear orchards still press right up against the edges of the developed area.
Summers here run hot enough that exterior work moves to the early morning, since by midday any pane in direct sun dries faster than it can be finished properly. Hillside properties on the east side get extra time allowed for access. Commercial glass along Biddle Road and around the downtown core runs on standing schedules and is cleaned before the retail day begins.

The bowl this city sits in traps air. Through the cold months a temperature inversion can hold woodsmoke and vehicle exhaust over the valley for weeks at a time, and that settles onto glass as a faint greasy haze rather than anything that looks like dirt. In late summer regional wildfire smoke does something similar with a finer ash. Orchard work on the valley floor adds dust and spray residue on top of both.
Inversion haze is oily and will not release with water alone, so it needs detergent and often a second pass on badly loaded panes. Ash is floated off wet and never wiped. Because summer rainfall is minimal here, nothing gets rinsed naturally, which is why most homes do better on three visits a year than the two that would suit a wetter climate.
That is the valley inversion at work. Cold air settles in the bowl and traps woodsmoke and exhaust for weeks, and the residue is oily rather than dusty. Water alone will not release it, which is why rain does not help and a quick wipe just smears it. Detergent, agitation and sometimes a second pass are what actually clear it off the glass.

We schedule exterior work early and take shaded elevations later in the day. That is why the crew may not start at the front of the house, and why appointments in July and August tend to be offered in morning slots rather than afternoons.
Three times a year suits most homes here, which is more than a wetter climate needs. Summer rainfall is too light to rinse anything, so orchard dust, road film and smoke residue simply accumulate. A pass in spring, one at the end of summer once the smoke has cleared, and one after the winter inversion breaks tends to keep glass looking right without overdoing it.
