Pollen behaves differently inside a valley. Ridges on either side slow the air, so the yellow spring load off oaks, maples and pines settles rather than blowing through, and it sits on the glass considerably longer than the same load would on open ground east of here.
Summer humidity then grows mildew in shaded frame corners, and hillside houses see more of it than most, since a slope keeps the lower elevation damp and in shadow through the day. Winter brings road salt and cinder spray on the streets that climb, and that lands on ground floor and basement level glass all winter long. Spring stays our busiest season here for exactly those reasons.
Carefully, and with the right footing. A house built into a slope can be one story at the front and three at the back, so the rear elevation often needs poles or a ladder set on leveling feet rather than straight ground. We walk the lot before starting and plan each elevation separately. Where a slope is too steep to place anything safely, that section gets reached from inside or from an upper deck instead.

Humidity then binds that yellow dust into a film on the glass. Tall narrow sash with decorative upper lights means many small panes, aged putty and muntins thin enough to flex, so everything is done by hand with a cloth rather than run over with a squeegee. We keep water out of the joints and dry as we go. Any putty that has crumbled or a lite that has gone loose gets pointed out before it becomes a bigger repair.
