Two things define the glass here. The buttes and the surrounding farm ground carry a fine silty soil, and dry weather with a strong east wind sends it drifting across whole neighborhoods, especially on the eastern edge where the nurseries and berry fields start. Then winter arrives, and this part of the metro takes freezing rain more often than the west side, with melting ice leaving mineral tracks down the pane.
Silty soil is flooded off before anything touches the glass, because dry wiping it is abrasive enough to leave scratches. Ice streaking needs a real wash rather than a wipe, since those minerals bond as the water evaporates. Tracks and screens fill with field dust quickly out here, so both are washed instead of shaken out, which keeps the next dry windy week from undoing the visit.
