Fernley works for a living. The town sits along Interstate 80 east of Reno with irrigated alfalfa ground on one side, a growing block of distribution and light industrial buildings on the other, and the Truckee Canal running through the middle of it. That mix hands us farm properties, warehouses and ordinary subdivisions inside the same short drive, which is not something the bigger Nevada cities can say.
Residential routes cover the neighborhoods off Main Street and out toward Farm District Road, where lots are wide, single story homes are the norm and there is room to work without shuffling a ladder. Older houses closer to the canal often have small original windows plus add on rooms carrying mismatched glazing from three different decades, so a single house can need three approaches. Commercial work along the interstate frontage runs on its own schedule, usually finished before the first shift starts and the yard fills with trucks.

Farming sets the calendar for glass here. Cutting and baling alfalfa fills the air with chaff and field dust for days at a stretch, and it drifts a long way across a valley this open. Any window downwind of a field during a cut wants a rinse before anything else happens to it.
Alkali is the second problem. Bare flats around the valley give up a white, salty dust that goes cloudy and streaky the moment it turns damp, and it clings harder than ordinary silt. Winter here brings genuine freezing, so anything left sitting in a track becomes ice and works at the seal, which is why tracks and weep holes get cleared every fall.
It should. Cutting and baling alfalfa puts chaff and field dust in the air for several days, and on open ground it travels much further than people expect. Cleaning glass mid cut on a property downwind of an active field means paying for a result that lasts an afternoon. We usually suggest booking a week or so after a cut finishes, or working the sheltered elevations first and coming back for the exposed side.
Most likely alkali dust off the bare flats around the valley. It is salty rather than gritty, and it turns cloudy and streaky as soon as it takes on any moisture, which is why glass can look worse after a light rain than it did before. It also clings harder than ordinary silt. Those panes get flooded and rinsed before a squeegee touches them, since wiping alkali across dry glass just smears it wider.
We do. Office fronts and entry glass on the distribution buildings along the interstate frontage pick up road film from truck traffic plus field dust off the surrounding ground, so those panes get a detergent wash before the rinse. Work is scheduled before the first shift or between shifts so a crew is not sharing a dock apron with forklifts. Most of these buildings settle on a quarterly plan for exterior faces.
