Auburn sits on a valley floor where two rivers come together, with the ground rising sharply on either side. Lea Hill to the east and West Hill above the freeway are newer, carrying two story homes and plenty of upper floor glass, while downtown and the older streets near Main hold smaller postwar houses and a walkable business district. The valley in between runs flat and open, part residential and part working ground.
That elevation split has a practical effect on how a day is run. Fog holds on the valley floor for hours after the hilltops are already in sun, so exterior work starts up on Lea Hill and drops into the valley once things dry. Storefront glass along Main Street is cleaned before opening. Grouping by elevation rather than by zip code saves a surprising amount of standing around waiting for conditions.

Two rivers running through town keep the air damp long after the rain has stopped, and that damp is what leaves glass here looking dull rather than obviously dirty. A thin film of river moisture, road dust and pollen sets in place instead of drying and blowing off. Cottonwood along the banks adds a sticky drop in early summer plus a blizzard of fluff that plugs screens and tracks within days.
A film like that needs detergent and agitation, not a garden hose. We wash, squeegee and then dry the edges so the moisture in the air does not immediately pull a fresh line down the pane. Cottonwood is best handled right after the season ends, and screens are pulled and rinsed rather than brushed, since fluff pressed into mesh just travels back onto clean glass.
Fog and damp sit on the valley floor for hours after Lea Hill and West Hill are already in the sun. Cleaning glass while the air is still saturated means water will not clear off the frame properly and the finish suffers. Starting up on the hill and dropping down as things dry produces a better result. It is also why an exact arrival time can shift on foggy mornings.
Screens and tracks take the worst of it, so both get pulled and washed rather than brushed off. Fluff pressed into mesh does not stay put, it travels straight back onto clean glass on the next breeze. Because the season is short, a clean scheduled just after the cottonwood finishes tends to give the longest run of clear windows through the rest of the summer.
Yes, both are regular routes. Homes up there tend to be two story with a good amount of upper level glass, so we plan proper access rather than stretching from a short ladder. Exterior work does not require anyone to be home. If interior cleaning is included we arrange one access window, and hill addresses are grouped together so the visit fits into a predictable time slot.
