This is one of the few parts of Texas where winter genuinely changes how the job is done. Amarillo sits high on the Panhandle plains and gets hard freezes, snow and long cold stretches, so from December through February we plan exterior work around the thermometer rather than around traffic or daylight. Cleaning glass below freezing is not just uncomfortable, it simply does not work, so those weeks shift heavily toward interior service.
Outside those months the city is straightforward to move through. Neighborhoods along Wolflin and the older streets near Polk have 1920s and 1930s houses with original wood sashes, deep porches and mature elms overhead. South and southwest of Interstate 40, the housing turns to newer brick on open lots with very little shelter from the wind. Commercial work runs along the Interstate 40 corridor and through downtown, mostly offices, hotels and ground floor retail with heavy door use.

Freeze and thaw is the local complication. Water that gets into a frame joint or a track expands as it freezes, working seals loose over time, and condensation on cold interior glass drips down to collect grime along the bottom rail. Ice melt tracked around entrances leaves a white residue on low glass.
Outside of winter, wind is constant and it brings two things: fine plains dust and, on an east wind, dust and organic particles off the feedyards that surround this part of the Panhandle. That combination settles into a gritty film. We flush before wiping, clear tracks dry, and time exterior work for days when the temperature holds well above freezing.
Exterior glass, only when the temperature stays comfortably above freezing. Below that, the solution freezes on the pane before it can be squeegeed off, which leaves a mess rather than a clean window. We watch the forecast and take exterior work on the milder days that appear through the season. Interior glass is unaffected by cold, so many customers schedule inside work in January and outside work in March.
Usually ice melt. Salt and chloride products used on walks and steps get tracked around, splashed by traffic and carried by wind, and they dry into a white haze on low glass and door panels. It is mineral residue, so a dry wipe just smears it. We wash it off with solution and rinse thoroughly, and we check the bottom track and weep holes at the same time, since the residue collects there too.
On a steady east wind, yes. Fine particulate carries a long way across open plains ground, and properties on the eastern edge of town notice it first. It combines with ordinary soil dust into a gritty film that clings once any moisture is present. There is nothing to be done about the source, so it becomes a scheduling question. Homes on that side of town typically need a shorter interval than the west side does.
