Around the commercial blocks, restaurant exhaust adds a heavier greasy layer on top.
The period homes bring a different constraint, since their windows cannot take fast handling. Steel casements rust at the bottom rail, leaded panels flex under pressure and century old putty crumbles. We degrease road and kitchen film with dwell time, hand detail small panes and casements, and adjust the method to the building instead of running one routine across the whole city.
Yes, and it is booked before opening for a practical reason: once the sidewalk fills there is nowhere safe to stage a ladder. Tall display glass, door panels, transoms and upper floor sash all get handled in one visit. The historic buildings often have decorative surrounds, so ladder placement is chosen to keep weight off anything delicate. Interior door glass usually goes on the same visit since it shows handling fastest.

Leaded glass gets hand detailing with no pressure, casements are cleaned in place rather than forced open, and we stay well clear of glazing putty that has already begun to fail. Existing damage is pointed out before we start work near it.
With a degreaser and enough dwell time to break the oil down. Whether it came from traffic exhaust or a nearby kitchen vent, the residue is oily, so water alone just moves it around and a dry cloth smears it. We apply, let it work, then wash and pull the pane clean in one pass. Frames, door pushes and the lower corners where the film runs down get detailed at the same time.
